📖 How to play

How to play Battleship

Hide your ships on your own grid, then take turns firing shots at the enemy grid to find and sink their whole fleet before they sink yours.

  1. 1

    Place your 5 ships

Set your fleet on your own grid: a Carrier of 5, a Battleship of 4, a Cruiser of 3, a Submarine of 3, and a Destroyer of 2. Tap Rotate to turn a ship, or tap Auto-place to drop them all at once.

  2. 2

    Press Ready

When all five ships are placed, press Ready. The enemy hides their own fleet where you cannot see it, and the battle begins.

  3. 3

    Fire a shot

On your turn, tap any square on the Enemy waters grid to fire there. You get one shot, then it is the other side's turn.

  4. 4

    Read hit, miss, or sunk

A red mark means you hit a ship, a white dot means you missed, and a whole ship turning red means you sank it. Your own grid shows the enemy's shots landing on you.

  5. 5

    Hunt the rest

After a hit, fire at the squares right next to it to finish that ship off, then keep hunting across the grid for the others.

How you win

Sink all five of the enemy ships before they sink all five of yours to win the battle.

After a hit, always try the four squares around it: ships sit in a straight line, so the rest is next door.

Play the computer for a quick game, or tap Play with friends to battle someone online in a private room.

Game guide

How to play Battleship online

Battleship is a two-player guessing game where you hide a fleet of ships on a grid and take turns firing shots to find and sink your opponent's ships. Each player secretly places five ships (a Carrier of 5, a Battleship of 4, a Cruiser of 3, a Submarine of 3, and a Destroyer of 2) on their own 10 by 10 grid, then calls out one square per turn on the enemy grid, which comes back as a hit, a miss, or a sunk when a whole ship goes down. The objective is to be the first to sink all five of the opponent's ships. On YaliKit you play Battleship free in your browser: place your fleet by hand or with one-click Auto-place, fire at the enemy waters grid while your own grid shows incoming fire, and play against a hunt-and-target computer opponent or a friend online in a private room. No download or signup is needed.
