Compare Multiple Sources

Different geolocation databases have different data. If accuracy matters, check an IP against multiple lookup services. Discrepancies are common, especially at the city level. Take any single result as an estimate, not truth.

Mobile IPs Are Tricky

Mobile carrier IPs are notoriously hard to geolocate. They often resolve to carrier headquarters, major cities in the coverage area, or completely wrong locations. Don't rely on IP geolocation for mobile traffic.

For Fraud Prevention

No. IP geolocation provides approximate geographic data, not precise locations. At best, you might get the city or neighborhood level. Many factors affect accuracy: ISPs often register addresses at their headquarters rather than customer locations, mobile IPs move around, and VPNs mask actual locations entirely. Law enforcement with legal warrants can get subscriber info from ISPs, but that's not publicly available.
When we flag an IP as a proxy, it means traffic through that IP is likely being routed through an intermediary - either a VPN service, a proxy server, or a Tor exit node. This is detected through database matching against known proxy/VPN provider IP ranges. It's not 100% accurate but helps identify non-residential traffic.
The 'Hosting' flag indicates the IP belongs to a data center or cloud provider rather than a residential ISP. Traffic from hosting IPs often comes from servers, bots, scrapers, or people using cloud-based VPN services. Websites sometimes treat hosting IPs differently than residential ones for fraud prevention.
AS stands for Autonomous System - it's a collection of IP ranges under a single organization's control. Every ISP, hosting company, and large organization has one or more AS numbers. For example, AS15169 is Google, AS14618 is Amazon AWS. The AS number tells you who controls the network, not necessarily who's using a specific IP.
Several reasons: Your ISP might register IPs in a central location. You might be connecting through a VPN or proxy. Mobile network IPs often resolve to carrier headquarters. Business internet might show the company's registered location. The geolocation database might simply have outdated information. It's rarely precise to your actual city.
Private IPs (10.x.x.x, 172.16-31.x.x, 192.168.x.x) aren't routable on the public internet, so there's nothing to look up. These addresses are used inside local networks - your home router assigns them to your devices. Only your public IP (assigned by your ISP) is visible to websites and can be looked up.
