Why Unlock Your PDF

Common reasons to remove PDF protection

Enable Printing

Your PDF opens fine but won't print? Remove the owner password restriction to print as many copies as you need.

Copy Text for Research

Need to quote from a PDF for research or reports? Unlock to copy text directly instead of retyping everything.

Edit and Annotate

Add comments, fill forms, or make edits to a restricted PDF. Unlock for full editing access.

Archive Without Passwords

Remove passwords from documents going into long-term archives so future access doesn't require hunting for forgotten passwords.

How It Works

1

Upload Protected PDF

Drag and drop your password-protected PDF or click to browse. The locked icon confirms we've detected a protected document.

2

Enter the Password

Type the password that was used to protect the PDF. Use the eye icon to toggle password visibility and verify what you're typing.

3

Download Unlocked PDF

Click Unlock PDF and download your unrestricted file instantly. The unlocked PDF opens without passwords and has full permissions enabled.

Tips for PDF Unlocking

Check Both Passwords

PDFs can have separate user (open) and owner (permission) passwords. If one doesn't work, try the other. Some PDFs only have owner passwords.

Toggle Password Visibility

Click the eye icon to show the password as you type. This helps catch typos, especially with complex passwords containing special characters.

Passwords Are Case-Sensitive

PDF passwords distinguish between uppercase and lowercase letters. 'Password123' is different from 'password123'. Enter it exactly as it was set.

Keep Original Protected Copies

After unlocking, save both versions if you might need the protected copy later. You can always re-protect using our Protect PDF tool with the same or different password.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. You must know the correct password to unlock a PDF. This tool removes protection by decrypting the file using your password - it cannot crack, guess, or bypass passwords. If you've forgotten the password, check your records, password manager, or contact whoever originally protected the document.
PDFs can have two types of passwords: User password (open password) is required to view the PDF at all. Owner password (permissions password) lets you open and view but restricts printing, copying, and editing. Our tool removes both types when you provide the correct password.
The PDF has an owner password that restricts permissions while allowing viewing. The document is protected to prevent printing, copying, or editing even though you can read it. You need the owner password to remove these restrictions.
Yes, unlocking PDFs you own or have authorization to access is legal. This tool is designed for legitimate uses like unlocking your own documents, PDFs where you have the password, or documents you're authorized to access. Do not use this to bypass protection on documents you don't have rights to.
No. Unlocking removes the encryption wrapper without touching the actual content. Text, images, formatting, fonts, and all other elements remain exactly as they were. The document quality is perfectly preserved.
We support all standard PDF encryption: RC4 40-bit, RC4 128-bit, AES 128-bit, and AES 256-bit. Any PDF that can be unlocked with a password (regardless of encryption strength) can be processed by this tool.
Double-check that you're entering the password correctly - passwords are case-sensitive. If the PDF has both user and owner passwords, try both. Some PDFs might not actually be password-protected but have other issues. The error message will help identify the problem.
Yes! This tool works on any device - iPhone, Android, iPad, or desktop. Upload your PDF, enter the password, and download the unlocked version directly on your mobile device. No app installation required.
Yes. Your password is sent over an encrypted connection (HTTPS/SSL) and is never stored, logged, or visible to anyone. It's used only for the instant decryption process and immediately discarded.
Files are automatically deleted from our servers within one hour of processing. We don't keep copies of your documents or the unlocked versions. Download your file promptly, as it won't be available indefinitely.
Currently, you can unlock one PDF at a time. Each unlock takes just seconds, so processing multiple files is quick. Simply unlock, download, then upload the next file. Batch processing is on our roadmap.
Common reasons include: creating password-free archives for long-term storage, sharing documents with people who don't need security restrictions, preparing files for systems that don't handle protected PDFs well, or simply no longer needing the protection you added.
Yes! Once unlocked, you can use our Protect PDF tool to add new password protection with different settings. This is useful if you want to change the password or adjust which permissions are restricted.
Yes, if the scanned PDF is password-protected, this tool can unlock it just like any other PDF. The scanned images inside remain the same - only the password protection is removed.
