Sow and capture stones in this ancient African strategy game!
Sow stones around the board and capture as many as you can!
Click your pits (bottom row) to sow stones. Land in your store for an extra turn!
Mancala is one of humanity's oldest and most widely played games, with archaeological evidence suggesting it was played over 7,000 years ago in ancient Africa. The word "mancala" comes from the Arabic word "naqala," meaning "to move."
This version uses the most popular ruleset called "Kalah," which is commonly played in the United States. Each player has six small pits and one large store. The game begins with four stones in each small pit, and players take turns picking up all stones from one pit and distributing them counter-clockwise.
What makes Mancala fascinating is the depth of strategy hidden within its simple rules. Players must think several moves ahead, balancing between scoring points, setting up captures, and preventing their opponent from gaining an advantage. It's a game of counting, planning, and outmaneuvering your opponent.
Click on any pit on your side (bottom row) that contains stones to pick them all up.
Drop one stone in each pit counter-clockwise, including your store but skipping the opponent's store.
If your last stone lands in your store, you get another turn immediately!
If your last stone lands in an empty pit on your side, capture that stone plus all stones in the opposite pit!
Develops counting, addition, and mental arithmetic abilities naturally.
Teaches forward thinking and multi-step planning abilities.
Connect with one of humanity's oldest and most widespread games.
Simple rules make it perfect for children and adults alike.
