How to play Pentago

Each turn, place one marble then twist one of the four quadrants. Be the first to line up five of your marbles in a row.

    You are one colour

    You play the black marbles, the other side plays white. Black goes first, then you take turns. Every turn has two parts you must do in order.

    Place a marble

    Tap any empty spot on the 6 by 6 board to drop your marble there. A glowing ghost marble shows where it will go, and you can tap another spot to move it before you twist.

  3. 3

    Twist a quadrant

    The board has four 3 by 3 boxes. After you place, tap a rotate arrow on any box to spin it a quarter turn left or right. The twist finishes your turn.

    Twist helps and hurts

    A twist moves every marble in that box. Use it to slide your marbles into a line, or to scramble the row your opponent was building.

    Make five to win

    Line up five of your marbles in a row, across, up and down, or diagonally, after the twist. The five is only checked once the box has finished spinning.

How you win

Be the first to get five of your marbles in a row in any direction, counted after your twist. If a twist gives both players five at once, or the board fills with no five, it is a draw.

Remember the win is checked after the twist, so plan the spin that completes your line, not just the placement.

How to play Pentago online

Pentago is a two-player abstract strategy game played on a 6x6 board split into four 3x3 quadrants that each spin, where Black moves first and the goal is to be the first to line up five of your own marbles in a row. What makes Pentago unique is that every turn has two mandatory parts applied together: you place one marble on any empty cell, then you rotate one of the four quadrants a quarter turn clockwise or counter-clockwise, so a single twist can both build your own line and scatter your opponent's. The winning five in a row can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal anywhere on the board, and crucially it is only checked after the rotation, so a placement that appears to make five can be broken by the twist that follows it. If a rotation leaves both players with five in a row at the same time the game is a draw, and a full board with no five is also a draw.
