How to play Ultimate Tic Tac Toe

Play on nine small tic-tac-toe boards at once. The cell you pick sends your opponent to the matching board, and you win by claiming three boards in a row.

    You are X or O

    X goes first, then you take turns placing one mark. There are nine small boards inside one big board.

    Tap a cell to play

    On your turn, tap an empty cell in the board you are allowed to play in. The board you must use is highlighted.

    Your cell picks their board

    The spot you play tells your opponent which small board to play in next. Play the middle cell and they must play the middle board.

    Free move on a full board

    If you send your opponent to a board that is already won or full, they get a free move and can pick any open board.

    Claim three boards in a row

    Get three in a row inside a small board to claim it. Claim three small boards in a line to win the whole game.

How you win

Win three small boards in a row, column, or diagonal on the big board. If every small board is settled with no line of three, the game is a tie.

How to play Ultimate Tic Tac Toe online

Ultimate Tic Tac Toe, also called Super Tic Tac Toe, is a two-player strategy board game played on a big 3 by 3 grid of nine small tic-tac-toe boards, 81 cells in all, where X moves first and players strictly alternate. The twist that makes it strategic is that the cell you play inside a small board decides which small board your opponent must play in next: if you play the top-right cell, your opponent must move in the top-right small board. If that target board is already won or completely full, your opponent gets a free move in any board that is still open. Winning three in a row inside a small board claims that board for you and locks it, and a small board that fills with no winner is a neutral draw that counts for neither side. You win the whole game by claiming three small boards in a row, column, or diagonal on the big board, and if every small board is settled with no big-board line it is an overall draw, so good play means thinking a move ahead about where each cell sends your opponent.
