Why Use PDF to Text Converter?

Complete Text Extraction

Every word from your PDF is extracted, including headers, footers, footnotes, and text boxes. Nothing is missed - you get all the readable content in clean, usable text format.

One-Click Copy

Preview the extracted text and copy it all to your clipboard with a single click. Paste directly into emails, documents, spreadsheets, or any application. No file downloads needed.

OCR for Scanned PDFs

Enable OCR to extract text from scanned documents and image-based PDFs. Convert paper documents into digital text. Works with any scan quality, though higher resolution produces better results.

Layout Options

Choose whether to preserve the original column and spacing structure, or extract as continuous flowing text. Preserved layout is great for tables; continuous text is easier to copy and paste.

Common Use Cases

Text extraction serves many professional needs

Search & Indexing

Extract text for full-text search systems. Make PDF content searchable in your document management system or website.

Data Processing

Need PDF content for programming? Extract to text for easy parsing, regex matching, and data extraction with any language.

Research & Analysis

Extract text from research papers for text analysis, citation management, or academic research purposes.

How It Works

1

Upload Your PDF

Drag and drop your PDF file or click to browse. We accept any PDF including scanned documents, multi-page reports, and complex layouts.

2

Choose Options

Enable OCR if your PDF is scanned. Choose whether to preserve the original layout or extract as continuous text. These options help optimize results for your use case.

3

Preview, Copy, or Download

See the extracted text in the preview area. Click 'Copy All' to copy to clipboard, or download as a .txt file. Word and character counts show extraction results.

Tips for Text Extraction

Only Use OCR When Needed

OCR is for scanned/image PDFs only. If text is selectable in your PDF viewer, it's a native PDF and doesn't need OCR. Using OCR unnecessarily just slows down extraction.

Choose Layout Based on Use

Preserve layout for documents with columns or tables you want to keep aligned. Use continuous text when you'll paste into other documents or need clean flowing content.

Use Copy for Quick Tasks

For quick copying into another app, use the Copy All button instead of downloading. It's faster and you can paste immediately without managing files.

Check Word Count

The word and character counts help verify extraction completeness. If counts seem low, your PDF might be image-based - try enabling OCR.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes! Enable the OCR option to extract text from scanned documents. Our OCR technology reads text from images and converts it to editable text. Higher resolution scans (300+ DPI) produce better results, but any quality works.
After extraction, click the 'Copy All' button in the preview area. The entire text is copied to your clipboard instantly. You can then paste it anywhere - emails, documents, spreadsheets, or any application.
With 'Preserve Layout' enabled, columns and spacing are maintained to approximate the original PDF structure - good for tables and multi-column documents. Without it, text flows continuously, which is cleaner for copying into other documents.
No, plain text doesn't support formatting. Only the text content is extracted. However, paragraph breaks and basic structure are maintained. If you need formatting, use our PDF to Word converter instead.
Tables are extracted as text with spacing to approximate the layout. For proper table handling with rows and columns, use our PDF to Excel converter which preserves table structure in spreadsheet format.
Output is UTF-8 encoded, supporting all languages and special characters including accented letters, symbols, and non-Latin scripts. This ensures compatibility with all modern software.
We support PDFs of virtually any size - hundreds of pages are no problem. Large files take slightly longer to process, but there are no hard limits. The preview shows all extracted text regardless of length.
For native PDFs (created digitally), extraction is virtually 100% accurate - we read the actual text data. For scanned PDFs using OCR, accuracy is typically 95-99% depending on scan quality and clarity.
Currently, we extract from the entire document. For page-specific extraction, use our Extract Pages tool first to isolate the pages you want, then extract text from that smaller PDF.
Plain text is simpler and more universal. It opens in any editor, works with programming tools, and is perfect for data processing. Word format is better when you need formatting preserved.
Yes, if you have the password. You'll be prompted to enter it. We support both user passwords (to open) and owner passwords (permission restrictions). After authentication, extraction proceeds normally.
Yes. All uploads use SSL encryption. Files are processed in isolated environments and automatically deleted within one hour. We never read, analyze, or share your document content.
Images are not included in text extraction - only the text content. If you need to extract images, use a different tool. OCR extracts text FROM images (like scanned text), but doesn't include the images themselves.
Yes! The tool works fully on smartphones and tablets. Upload, extract, and copy text directly on your mobile device. The copy button works on mobile browsers, making it easy to paste into other apps.
